Bin Upgrade Project
This is an update regarding the waste bins issues at Saughton Mains Park and Stenhouse Street West area.
The City of Edinburgh Council carried out a consultation late in 2019 with residents at Saughton Road and Saughton Mains Park to remove the paladin bin systems and to install on street containerisation for each block with a hard standing area.
Basically, the Council will take away the large communal in open areas where flytipping has been regular occurrences, and build separate sets of bins, recycling included, for every block. From what we gather, it is likely this will mean more bins per property, particularly for recycling, and these bins will then be in fenced off areas, built over the greenspaces, on the paths next to each block. This should make flytipping more difficult, as it is not possible to drive up to these spots to dump items.
The bin alcove areas at 5, 7, 10 and 12 Saughton Mains Park will require some creative thought as far as the Council is concerned, and there will be a visit with an architect to see if a solution can be found for these. It may be that the Council can extended the rear door entry screens to gap that these blocks have – all the best possible options will be explored.
Unfortunately, in March 2020, the Council had advised their officers to work from home due to Covid-19 and most restrictions were being put into place which meant the Council were unable to move forward with the bin upgrade project at that time.
However, the Council is looking to move forward with the project but they cannot give a definitive date at the moment when the project can physically start as some Neighbourhood Environmental Projects were put on hold across the city.
We are awaiting guidance and instruction on when the bin upgrade project can resume and hope that this will happen at some point in the near future. We will keep you updated moving forward.
We also requested the Council to explore the possibility of having a CCTV camera installed within the vicinity as we are aware there are a lot of flytipping from tradespeople and they need to be fined and deterred from using our home area as a dumping ground for their commercial waste.
